Hilltop offers enrichment activities across a variety of content areas. Check out our offerings from Fall 2019 for an idea of the types of classes we offer.

Monday
JANE GOODAL’S ROOTS & SHOOTS
Second Grade – Fifth Grade

This group will be members of Jane Goodal’s Roots and Shoots organization. Club members will identify and address both local and global environmental initiatives while becoming compassionate citizens that our planet needs.

YOGA
Preschool – Second Grade

Wind down in the afternoon with a yoga class designed with children in mind. Learn yoga poses, move to music, and flex those imagination muscles while developing strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.

CARD GAMES FOR KIDS
Second Grade – Fifth Grade

Join us for an afternoon of classic and ultimate card games. The class will have you challenging friends and family to a game of Go Fish, War Concentration and more. Card games help children develop fine motor skills, as they hold playing cards, build dexterity eventually building agility and eye hand coordination and entails a great deal of strategy.

OPEN DESIGN LAB

The makerspace and design lab will be open for upper school students to work on projects for the Technology Student Association.

Tuesday
YOUNG MASTERS
First Grade – Fourth Grade

This class is designed for the lower school student for whom their regular art classes simply aren’t enough! With more individualized attention and instruction, students will design and create their own paintings following the classic masterpieces painted by artists they know. We’ll cover Picasso’s portraits, Van Gogh’s landscapes, O’Keeffe’s flowers, Degas’ drawings and more!

GIRLS WHO CODE
Third Grade – Fifth Grade

Hilltop Country Day School has been selected by the Girls Who Code organization to host the official Girls Who Code Club. The club offers 3rd – 5th grade girls the opportunity to learn core concepts in computer science through projects based on their interests. Participants also complete a final project designed to make an impact on their community.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE
Fifth Grade – Eighth Grade

Ultimate Frisbee is a growing sport that combines elements from the sport of soccer, basketball, and football. It teaches how integrity and respect can be upheld in a competitive atmosphere. Your child will learn the basic skills and rules of Ultimate Frisbee and end with a scrimmage.

Wednesday
HILLTOP HAWKS RUNNING CLUB
Fifth Grade – Eighth Grade

The Hilltop running club promotes health and wellness. The main goal for our runners is to improve their fitness, sports performance and physical conditioning. Runners will receive a training log to keep track of their progress.

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS
Fourth Grade – Eighth Grade

Love “Stranger Things” on Netflix? The thriller starts off with friends playing Dungeons and Dragons! This exciting role playing game helps players build academic skills like reading, writing and math, critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork. Each student will assume the role of an adventurer seeking to help the village of Ravenswing rid themselves of a pack of bandits who are raiding travelers on a nearby road. Adventure awaits!

MAD SCIENCE PRESENTS: BRIXOLOGY
Third Grade – Fifth Grade

Brixology sets the foundation for our next generation of makers! Kids learn about different types of engineering and then ream up to construct a different engineering-themed project using LEGO bricks. They learn about aerospace engineering while assembling a space station. They explore mechanical engineering as they build boats and vehicles. That’s not all, from carnival rides to drawing machines, mechanical animals to truss bridges: your future engineer will build upon their creativity to solve real – world design challenges, while developing their problem-solving and team building skills. Let the tinkering begin!

MATH CLUB
Third Grade – Eighth Grade

Brains on and buzzers at the ready! This course is designed to motivate and prepare students for competition, and “bee” style math tournaments. Learn tips and tricks to help race through the sprint round. Put down those calculators, you’ve got to use your brains and wits! The target round focuses on problem solving and you’ll have a calculator on hand to work through 4 pairs of problems with 6 minutes allotted for each. The team round is all about collaboration and students will join forces to complete 10 challenging problems.

KIDDIE SOCCER
Registration for Ages 3 – 6

Kiddie Soccer will introduce your child to the world’s most popular sport: soccer. Kiddie soccer engages fun and learning together. Players will develop great hand-eye coordination skills as they learn how to play the game. To register go to their website: www.kiddiesoccer.com, click “registration” and enter 66DCH for your session code. Click the “private program registration” button and complete the form. At bottom of page, select “package type” then register and follow the directions to make payment.

WOODWORKING
Second Grade – Fourth Grade

Work on woodcraft projects in the makerspace and design lab in this woodworking course designed for young carpenters. Hand tools and safe practices will be introduced as students create useful products to be used at home and school.

TECH THURSDAY
Third Grade – Eighth Grade

From Minecraft to digital photography, web design to animation, students enrolled in Tech Thursdays will have the opportunity to create, explore and collaborate using technology. This course is inspired by the Genius Hour movement and students are encouraged to choose and topic or project that inspires them.

PAINT AND MUNCH
Fifth Grade – Eighth Grade

Relax and learn how to paint in this fun after school studio class. Designed for the Upper School student who wants to explore different painting and design techniques, we will be creating guided paintings in the “paint and sip” style. We will be using acrylic, watercolor, and pastel mediums. Bring a snack, your creativity, and your smock to explore your studio in a whole new way. Students will produce a piece of art on canvas to take home at the end of the session.

MAD SCIENCE STEM EXPLORERS
Prekindergarten – Second Grade

Explore awesome hands-on science with a magical twist! In this program we will use chemistry to brew up some exciting science experiments, pressure to understand the air all around us, and even learn about our good friend Eggbert while we get down with density! Don’t miss the magical program, where you can learn all about magic tricks while you fly high and spread your wings with Fantastic Flyers!

CHESS CLUB
Kindergarten – Eighth Grade

Learn to play the wonderful and fun game of chess. The program will not only teach you all the rules of the game but also give you an idea of how to go about winning your game- from the opening to the endgame. Must have a minimum of 4 students to run this club. If you already know how to play, your game will improve through competitive play, puzzles, and instruction on tactics and strategies. Some students will be invited to play outside tournaments and events.

DASH AND DOT ROBOTICS
First Grade – Fifth Grade

* NOTE: This class runs through March 6 * Using apps and a tablet the students will learn to code while they make robots Dash and Dot sing, dance and navigate a series of challenges. Sensors on the robot mean they react to the environment around them, including the students. This class is registered to compete in the Dash and Dot Wonder League Robotics Competition.
